He is one of the most distinguished Polish film directors, a professor, stage director, screenwriter, artistic manager and producer; head of TOR Film Production, awarded many prestigious prizes at international festivals, won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival for „A year of the quiet sun” („Rok spokojnego słońca”). He created his own film world, in his films he broaches serious subjects of moral dilemmas, difficult choices, questions of faith and doubts, problems with one’s value system. He is known for working with the best Polish actors like Zbigniew Zapasiewicz, Maja Komorowska and his films are recognised for being ornamented with beautiful music composed by Wojciech Kilar. He is also the author of numerous books, ‘On editing an amateur film’ and ‘Discourse on an amateur film’ among others, and a member of European Film Academy.
