„Józef Pankiewicz. From Paris to Vistula on the 120th anniversary of artist’s on location paintings at Kazimierz Dolny” Exhibition

It is one of the presentations that aim at presenting artists who laid grounds for the artistic community in Kazimierz. One of them was Józef Pankiewicz (1866-1940). He was one of the first Polish painters, who started to paint in impressionists’ and later symbolists’ styles. He also initiated a trend of Polish colour painting, that had huge impact on our painters and graphic artists.

The breakthrough in his artistic life was trip to Paris in 1889, the vibrant city of art. This city full of inspiration and artistic passion took over his senses and changed his view of painting. In Paris Pankiewicz learned about innovative impressionists style of painting, which inspired him. He was taken by the potential of colour and light, and since then they became the essence of his works.

Not many people know, that in Pankiewicz’s ‘impressionist period’ Kazimierz Dolny played a very important role. In 2010 we are celebrating 120 years anniversary since Pankiewicz has appeared for a second time in Kazimierz carrying his easels (for the first time he arrived in summer of 1886, but there are no paintings left from this stay). Pankiewicz’s most impressionist paintings came into existence in Kazimierz Dolny and they become a very important piece of Polish art history. Would they be painted somewhere else, than Kazimierz?

“Art Community in Krzemieniec” Exhibition

Krzemieniec by Ikwa River is one of the foundations of Polish east borderlands, so called Kresy. Frequently linked with Juliusz Slowacki – he was born and raised there. It´s less associated with the famous Krzemieniec´s secondary school. Restored to life after the World War I,  it was the center, not only of education, but also of culture of those territories, until Sepetember 1939. It is not a common knowledge nowadays, that Krzemieniec, especially in the 30s of the twentieth century was transformed into an artistic community. It was a sensation across Europe – where artistic colonies in other European countries were closed after World War I, and actually Krzemieniec formed a completely new outbreak of art (in this case, it is difficult to ignore the comparison with Kazimierz!). The most important role in promoting it in the city is accounted to Krzemieniec´s secondary school and its professors, mostly Stanislaw Sheybal. An important test for the arts community was an exhibition of young painters, who formed “Krakow Group”, which took place in the summer of 1934. Shortly after that Krzemieniec had founded scholarships for artists and has organized, since 1936, Summer Drawing Courses. The city began to attract more and larger groups of artists, mostly from the Cracow and Lvov, although people from another places also were present. Many of these painters were the “colorists”, members of the “Zwornik” group with Emil Krcha, “Pryzmat” group, but also (before 1939), members of the Paris Committee began to arrive. They were so called capists with Jan Cybis.

Today, for the first time, the almost forgotten Krzemieniec arts community will be presented as an exhibition. It´s not only to restore the memory of an important piece of Polish culture in Kresy, but also to present an artistic phenomenon, whose development was interrupted by the development of the World War II actions.

“Magic and charm coming from fabrics” Exhibition of Swavy Launay’s works

It’s impossible to define unambiguously the style in which Swave Launay creates. Presented works show her rich imagination and extraordinary sensitivity for the world around her. These very rich compositions look like paintings created by a very experienced artist. Launay’s works perfectly represent the mood of the places – sunny colours of the city and village landscapes, and also scenes from people’s lives. Presented works are created by a astonishing combination of ordinary fabrics and hand- woven and hand-painted ones.

‘A bird’s eye view of Vistula river in Malopolska’ Exhibition

It’s a view over the Vistula valley and its beauty, and variety from a perspective that is inaccessible for many of us. At the exhibition you will have an opportunity to ‘fly’ over Vistula, as there will be a special pier as a vantage point. To make it more spectacular and realistic visitors will be equipped with 3D glasses. Presented photographs were made by Rafał Siek and Artur Tabor. The exhibition is also supported by photographs from The Archive of Regional Protection of Historical Monuments in Lublin and Central Centre of Documents for Geodesy and Cartography in Warsaw.
