He is a prose writer, screenwriter, filmmaker and stage director, a professor and dean of the Directing Department at Łódź Film School. He made his first feature film entitled „The Return” in 1977 and received a Golden Camera as the best debutant. Another film, „Aria for an Athlete”, won many prizes at Polish and international festivals and then his name became known not only in Poland. Apart from making films, he is also the author of a couple of stories and novels, one of which was awarded the Wilhelm Mach Prize in 1971. He cooperated with Warsaw Drama Theatre and Krakow Old Theatre. He also directed some of the plays staged for TV Theatre.
