TWO RIVERSIDES Festival is an alliance of different kinds of art. That’s why one of our sections is devoted to music films. Music, My Love section consists of nine films, five of which will have their Polish premieres at our Festival.

We’ve already written about the premiere screening of Tom DiCillo’s WHEN YOU ARE STRANGE: A FILM ABOUT THE DOORS, for which Johnny Depp provided the narration. It is a real homeage paid to this illustrious rock quartet, to the artists who achieved success with six albums recorded in 5 years. It provides new insight into the revolutionary legacy and impact of their music on pop culture. Filmmaking was important for the band. Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met when they were studying at the UCLA Film School.

Another interesting film in this section is AMERICAN ASTRONAUT. It’s a comedy, musical and science-fiction film. The director, Cory McAbee, whi is also a musician, will be our guest from August 1 to 4.


A video clip is a natural combination of music and film. Anton Corbijn is the author of such clips as Strangelove, Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode,  Heart-shaped Box by Nirvana,  Atmosphere by Joy Division or One by U2. Shadow Play: The Making of Anton Corbijn is a documentary film about this outstanding filmmaker and it will also have the premiere screening at our Festival. For the purposes of the production of this film manz artists were interviewed, e.g.  Chris Martin from Coldplay, Brandon Flowers from The Killers and Brendan Sumner from New Order.

Jack White and Meg White will take us on a journey through Canada. THE WHITE STRIPES UNDER THE GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS directed by Emmett Malloy is a record of the band’s tour organized on the tenth anniversary of their formation. We could say it’s a 93-minute-video clip but apart from listening to live music we can observe their relations outside the stage.

Thanks to Valeriy Todorowski’s HIPSTERS we will travel into the world of motley jackets, boots with thick rubber soles and omnipresent boogie, everything in the realities of Moscow of 1950s. The musical received a few Nika awards (the equivalent of the Oscar) granted by the Russian Film Academy.

Other premiere screenings within ‘Music, My Love’ section are two pictures from Africa. The first one, directed by Martin Baer, is KINSHASA SYMPHONY which will take us into the heart of Congo and in which the author tries to tell how come it is possible to create one of the most complex systems of cooperation, a symphony orchestra, in one of the most chaotic cities in the world. The second African film is Renaud Barreto and Florento de La Tullaye’s BENDA BILILI! It’s a poignant story about a group of 7 musicians. Incredible images of Africa, the country of contrasts, many colours, joys, but also full of poverty and suffering are emerging from the film.


We also have some pictures representing the South American cinema. Our next discovery, also shown for the first time in Poland, is GRUPO CORPO directed by Barreto Fabio and Marcelo Santiago. It is an amazing story about a Brazilian dance-theatre group. The final title in this section is Stascha Bader’s THE ROOTS OF REGGAE.
