Carl Th. Dreyer is an artist who had a tremendous effect on the development of cinema. His films, unusually strong in terms of form and message they carried, caused a lot of controversy inducing purely religious reflections at the same time. Brought up in a Lutheran family, Dreyer focused in his works on the conflict between man and institution, state and religious alike.
