August 4: Norteado – meeting with the director
‘Northless’, directed by a Mexican filmmaker Roberto Perezcano, gives a fresh look on the sad lot of Mexican immigrants trying to cross the Mexican-American border. The film tells a story of a young man and his numerous, unsuccessful attempts to cross the border. Somehow he manages to create a new ‘family’ in the town he’d settled in. The meeting with the director will be held on August 4 at 5.50 p.m. in I Love Cinema Café.
‘Northless’ is Perezcano’s feature debut. The picture was awarded many times at important film festivals and received 10 nominations to Ariel Awards (the Mexican version of the Oscar), including the nomination for the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress Awards.
What’s the plot? Andrés, a young farmer from Oaxaca, reaches the Mexico/US border and tries to cross over. Failing repeatedly, he settles in Tijuana to plot his next attempt. Between each try, he discovers that this depraved border town, his new adopted home, is quite a troubled one. While biding time there, Andrés not only confronts his dreams and what he has left behind, but also those of the people he has recently befriended: Cata and Ela, women who own a Tijuana convenience store and await their husbands’ return from the north to retrieve them.
