Have you ever felt this thrill before entering a cinema? Before entering a land completely new, unknown, uncanny? I loved this feeling, and to this day film is for me more of an adventure than a commercial product. The full length world rarely gives artistic and production freedom to a filmmaker, whereas according to what I can see, working on short films still allows for this margin of wildness, of experiment –for communing with the essence of cinema.

Every year the most exciting thing is watching competition shorts, made by amateurs, students, fresh graduates. It is like watching people becoming artists. The visions may not be perfectly shaped but they are promising beauty or are often already stunningly beautiful. Every time I watch these first films, I have this thrill and I recall one song from my childhood.

In a queue, in a queue

Dreadfully long

Came a lady

Journalist

And we told her so:

What‘s the matter, what’s the matter;

Where they play the film

That a boy or a girl

Would like to live in.

We are waiting for the films

On big and little screens

We are waiting for the films

Which will be just for us.

What awesome outcomes could their works bring in the future? If only they wouldn’t lose freedom in thinking and wilderness at heart. We are waiting for the films for us!
